Mindset coaching is a relatively new term and way of thinking about life, but it is based on decades of research by Stanford University Psychology Professor Carol S. Dweck. She has authored over one hundred research articles and seven books that have been translated into twenty different languages, including Changing what counts: beyond standardized test scores and Mindset: The New Psychology of Success and Mindset.

Since the publication of her books and appearances on major media such as CBS evening news, NPR, Dateline, PBS, and TED Talks, mindset coaching has become a popular term for life coaches.

The idea behind the term is Dweck’s research shows that individuals have either a growth or a fixed mindset. A growth mindset is one that views intelligence as something that can be expanded through effort, good strategies, and mentorship. A person with a growth mindset believes that their abilities can be developed over time. In this way, they see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
