Are you looking to grow a YouTube channel in 2021? Maybe you are looking to get 1000 subscribers, perhaps 10,000! Well, you are in the right place! Today, I share six lessons from my 11+ years on YouTube and how I finally got to 10k Subscribers on my Baby Got Bot channel.

Where I started in 2020

I cannot believe I gained 5.32k subscribers on my Baby Got Bot channel in just a year! I mean, seriously, that is crazy! I had no idea how far I had come until I watched my Tubebuddy 2020 year in review. It gave me butterflies in my stomach! 2020 was the year I hit 10k subscribers, and it feels so good.

It just goes to show that even in an incredible niche industry (Chat Marketing), you can grow a channel on YouTube if you put in the work. Because I put in the work and always strived to get better, I have been able to get so many benefits from this channel. From working with top brands to being paid to speak worldwide, YouTube has opened doors for me as nothing has done before! I can’t wait to see what 2021 will bring!

How I ended 2020

YouTube is one of the oldest social media networks today as it was officially released to the public in 2005. I have been dabbling in the YouTube space for over 11 years, with one of my earliest videos, which I created for a client and did not even have my face in it, was released in 2008, which you can view here:

One of the oldest videos I created way back in 2008. I believe I made this on iMovie.

It was a BIG year for me. Not only did I hit the 10k mark, which opens up access to the Los Angels YouTube studio (which, of course, I can’t use right now because of Covid), but I also grew Baby Got Bot by over 5k subscribers this year alone. It was not until I saw this video that I realized how far I had come in 2020, and it felt great to see that my hard work and consistency paid off.

So how did I do it?

Here are six tips I would like to share about my channel growth:

Lesson number 1: Stick with it and be consistent

As I mentioned before, it took me four years to grow this channel to where it is today, and I made many mistakes along the way. But if you stick with it and always strive to improve, you can still grow a Youtube channel! Showing up consistently for yourself, your subscribers, and the channel is key to growth. I chose to do one video per week, and that has pretty much been my consistent schedule for four years. Although I will do week-long series or things like Vlogmas, which challenges me to do a video every day, my subscribers can pretty much always count on at least one video per week from me.

Lesson number 2: Become obsessed with improvement.

I look at YouTube like a game of chess. I am obsessed with beating it. I watch videos, take courses, listen to podcasts, go through the creator academy, and always test new things. I look at every video as an opportunity to improve. How can I make the sound better, the lighting, the environment, the instruction I am giving, my energy, and the edits better? I would never call myself a YouTube expert, and you shouldn’t either. I am a student, always looking to learn and get better along the way.

Lesson number 3: Take SEO seriously

I can honestly say that one of the main things that go my channel to gain 5k subscribers in 2020 alone was my new focus on SEO. I have dabbled in it before this year, but it was not until 2020 that I started to take a new focus and learn all I could about making my SEO better. I invested in Tubebuddy and utilized all the tools available to make my videos searchable not only on youtube but also on Google. I know I still have a LOT to learn in the SEO space, but I can honestly say it is one of the most impactful things you can do for your channel growth. By the way, if you want to check out TubeBuddy for yourself, I have linked to it in the description below. PLUS subscribe to this channel as I have a special SEO audit video coming out in the new year!

Lesson 4: Follow the data — test is best

That is what I have learned in my 14 years as a digital marketer. Test what may work, test what people are telling you, then look at the data. What is working? The data will tell you where the opportunities are. I jump in and analyze my data every week using Morningfame and YouTube studio. I also use Tubebuddy to split-test things like my titles and descriptions, as well as my thumbnails.

The data will tell you where the opportunities are.

Lesson number 5: Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself and your channel

I am not saying you should buy a new camera or expensive lights. I shot the first ten years I was on YouTube using a MacBook webcam, a flip camera (which they don’t even make anymore, and my smartphone. Once they had them. BUT along the way, I did get new lights, new mics, a new camera, new editing software, and more. Not all at once, but as I learned and was ready for the next step. But on that same note, don’t let the lack of gear or knowledge stop you from starting. You can grow a channel with just a phone and some natural light. And then, as you get better and more comfortable, you can move from there.

Nowadays, I have a Canon T61 camera, and I just got a new Go Pro Hero 9. I am excited to start playing with it. I have Dassne desk mount lights, a Rode Wireless mic, or a Blue Yeti that I have had FOREVER; I use Final Cut Pro to edit my videos, Ecamm, and restream.io to go live, and TubeBuddy is my main squeeze when it comes to helping me with SEO. But it took me YEARS to level up to this gear, and honestly, I only plan to get more and expand from here.

…don’t let the lack of gear or knowledge stop you from starting. You can grow a channel with just a phone and some natural light.

Lesson 6: Start now

If I could leave you with one thing, it would be this, start now! I wish I would have taken YouTube more seriously back in 2009. I wish I would have understood that consistency, SEO, an obsession with improvement were all part of the success recipe. Instead, I thought that YouTube does not work for years or that only the lucky people can grow a channel. It just isn’t true. If you put in the work, you can grow a channel no matter what the year and what the competition is doing. Start today! Throw away fear and excuses and hit the record button!

I want to say thank you to everyone who watched, shared, subscribed and believed in me along the way. What a crazy year!! I had so much fun I even decided to launch this new channel, Baby Got Content, where I will be focusing more on the creator side of digital marketing (something I am very passionate about). So if that sounds interesting to you, please subscribe!
