Tips on how to make 2019 a great year for your business
The new year is here! YAY! But what now? Are you feeling overwhelmed by all your goals? Do you feel like you don’t know how to take the first few steps in the direction of success? Have no fear! I am here to bring you some great business and marketing advice from my friends and community. I will share with you their awesome tips for the new year and give you a rundown on why their tip will help you succeed! So grab a pen and paper and get ready to take some notes because your brain is about to be full of new ideas to help propel you into the new year and towards business success!
“Don’t forget about the people who have supported you at your lowest point. They believe in you so you need to believe in you too!” ~ Marisa Cali
I love this advice from Marisa Cali because it shines a light on all the people who have helped us get to where we are going. It can be easy to forget those that stood by us through the hard times, once the hard times are a distant memory (that we often times want to forget) but don’t do it! Be sure to extend a thank you to those who have stood by you through the thick and the thin. But take it even further and pay it forward by lending a helping hand to another who could use your help through hard times themselves.
“Make sure you are building a business and not just a job. I.e. don’t get so caught up in the current details that you forget long-term goal revisions at year markers.” ~ Leigh Covington
“Make a plan! Don’t go into the New Year without an idea of what you’re going to promote and what your goals are. It’s very hard to get consistent, predictable results on social media when you just wing it. And, just for the record, “I’ll decide what to post every morning” isn’t a plan.” ~ Ysmay
Such on-point advice from both Leigh and Ysmay! This is something I see a lot of entrepreneurs doing. I even do it myself. Focusing way too much on the right now that we don’t stop and plan for the future. A real business has a plan. So take some time to organize yourself. Understand your costs and set your yearly goals. Then take what you learn and apply it to a business plan. This will act as a roadmap to success in the coming year. If you want more information on how to do this, my friend Ysmay just did a fantastic webinar in my Social Media Brainstorming group all about setting a business plan complete with goals and revenue planning! You can check it out by joining my group and checking out the group videos.

“Be yourself, your real self. Not the I’m posing for a photo or being fake surprised so I have something that looks ‘authentic’ to post to IG/FB etc self. Your real self because otherwise, we can tell…we can all tell when you’re faking it. You don’t have to cry online or tell us about all your personal junk but, be real. Comb your hair, brush your teeth, put your best self forward but just make sure it’s you.” ~ Tony Iacoviello
“Keep it real! Attract incredible friends and ideal clients by being your authentic self. Anyone who isn’t into it can keep scrolling 😘” ~ Beth Griffin
I could not agree more with Tony and Beth on this one. At the end of the day, the people who are authentic are the ones who will stand out in all the best ways. When you are true to yourself you will draw the type of clients who are perfect for you. You will be happier to work with people who want to work with the real you instead of trying to please people all the time. Your clients will enjoy working with you more because they are your ideal customer and because you will likely give them the best service around. Be true to you. You do not need to take everyone in the world as a client. Not everyone is going to be right for you to work with. Focus on being authentic and bringing value. The rest will fall into place.
“Start using video! It’s the easiest way to connect with your customers and it can easily be cross distributed across all platforms” ~ Desiree Martinez
Video is where it is at but don’t take Desiree’s word for it! Here are some mindblowing stats:
- 82% of Twitter users watch video content on Twitter
- 45% of people watch more than an hour of Facebook or YouTube videos a week.
- Over 500 million (half a BILLION) people are watching video on Facebook every day (via Forbes)
- Marketers who use video grow revenue 49% faster than non-video users.
- Sixty-four percent of consumers make a purchase after watching branded social videos (via tubularinsights).
- Social video generates 1200% more shares than text and images combined.
- Video drives a 157% increase in organic traffic from SERPs.
- Viewers retain 95% of a message when they watch it in a video compared to 10% when reading it in text.
- The average user spends 88% more time on a website with video.
I guess you should start working on that video marketing strategy…
“Engage with your community and understand how best you can serve them.” ~ Alan Hennessy
If you often sit around and wonder what you can do to get more engagement, more sales, more everything online perhaps it is time to stop and ask. It is as simple as posting questions and gaging your audience to see what would be valuable to them. When you show you are genuinely interested in what your audience needs you will do a better job at creating solutions to solve those problems. You will also see your engagement and positive sentiment increase!
“Do something original with marketing, connect with people, because you actually care, people are tired of the old tricks, at least I am, feel like they are just trying to manipulate me and then I’m just not even interested and a bit disgusted. Then once you have interest, follow it up with the best customer care possible to show them you actually do care.” ~ Elmarie Hyman
I am sure you are sensing a theme here. Authenticity matters. Caring about your audience matters. But something that Elmarie points out that I also think is vital for success with online marketing is to be original. In order to stand out in a very noisy and crowded space, you need to be different. And there is no one like you, so start there and don’t be afraid to be a little odd, a little out there. Let your true colors shine through the noise. I personally did this over 2018 with my Baby Got Bot videos over on YouTube. I took a topic that was gaining a lot of traction and I made it my own with short, easy to follow 80’s themed videos. Doing things my way with a little more funk has really helped me to stand out in this space! Check out my videos for yourself at www.youtube.com/user/stellar247
“Don’t keep chasing new social media platforms. Figure out where your tribe is and get good at that platform. Remember that social is about being social and building know, like, and trust.” ~ Jim Fuhs
“Pick one or two social media platforms and focus on those instead of trying to dabble in all of them at once. Get comfortable with those before you start to scale up your strategies to include more services. Be patient, be diligent… have fun!” ~ Karin Boertmann Polak
Such great advice from Jim and Karin. I used to tell my students all the time that it is better to be really good at one or two social networks than mediocre at them all. It really is true! Focus in on the social networks that matter. Learn to use them well. Make it so you are so used to those networks that it becomes easy to navigate. Then you can move on to more. But always remember, you do not need to be on all the social networks to be successful. You can seriously be on just one and do great! Figure out where you can shine and bring the most value to your community and go there.
I hope you enjoyed these tips from my friends. I know I for one am looking forward to another journey around the sun! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you with your social media and online marketing success in 2019!
